SPAN 323: Hispanic Sociolinguistics
The core ideas of sociolinguistics are introduced in this course, with a particular emphasis on the symbolic value of language as a means of expressing group identity based on factors such as region, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic class, age, and other means of identifying group affiliation. The course also covers subjects like linguistic diversity, cross-linguistic interaction, linguistic attitudes, and linguistic identity. Presented in Spanish.
COURSE NARRATIVES
I took SPAN 323 Hispanic Sociolinguistics, in spring 2022. The class was taught by Professor Rebecca Pozzi and helped me fulfill MLO 2. The course outline provides an overview of the fundamental ideas in sociolinguistics, which is the study of language in its social context. Considering the connections between who we are, how we live, and how we talk, it investigates why language varies from region to region, group to group, individual to individual, and circumstance to situation, as well as why language changes over time. It emphasizes on the symbolic importance of the Spanish language as a means of expressing group identification as defined by area, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, and other factors. The course also covers issues like linguistic diversity, interlanguage communication, linguistic attitudes, and linguistic prejudice. During this course we completed an interview with people that are from other countries and we had to analyze the way they speak, their accent, and words that we were not aware of or familiar with. I found this very interesting and exciting because I learned new words and I learned of words that I'm aware of and I know but in other countries have a different meaning s. The process of recording and analyzing the interview helped my knowledge of linguistics grow as it made me understand more of the other person's language and culture. It was very interesting but also an educational experience for me. This course also taught me a great deal, gave me more knowledge when it comes to other languages and made me appreciate other languages as well. It also made me aware that if I ever go to another country I need to be careful with the words I use and not assume that they will have the same meaning everywhere I go.
