COURSE NARRATIVES
This MLO 3 is fulfilled by SPAN 316 Cultures and Civilizations of Spain, which I took in Fall 2021. The class was taught by David Vila Dieguez. In this course I learned about the culture of Spain, before this class I had very little knowledge of it and with the course my knowledge grew and I learned about the history and the culture. The main focus was on geography, religion, sociology, and the arts of the Iberian Peninsula. I studied the relation of the evolution of Spanish culture and civilisation, with a focus on the mentalities and cultural outputs. Which I found very interesting. For this course I had to do a project and I chose to do it about El arte durante el franquismo. This project was a video recording talking about different types of arts that were made during the time of Francisco Franco dictation. The art pieces were made by different artists and each art piece has a different story to it. The art piece I described was El Guernica de Pablo Picazzo from 1937. This art piece was one of the most important pieces from the artist's career because of his political character and his style. I learned that there were two theories to this artwork; one was that it was inspired by the historical context of the civil war and the other one was an autobiography of Pablo Picazzo. When you first look at the art piece it seems very confusing with animals and people. They both look deformed and are scattered everywhere in the piece. Analyzing the art piece I can understand why one of the theories is a historical context of the civil war because the population was bombed by Legion Condor from the German air force with the support of the Italian air force as well . Which causes a lot of deaths. With this art piece not only did I learn about history but also about the meaning of the art during that time.
