COURSE NARRATIVES
This MLO 5 is fulfilled by SPAN 301S Service Learning in the Chicano / Latino Community, which I took in fall 2022. The class was taught by Professor Dr. Carolyn González. In this course I learned about the community and their needs. I had to look and choose where to do my service learning, I chose to do it with Gil Basketball Academy. The academy is for kids of ages 4- 17 years old. In the academy I worked with kids of the age of 4 to teach them basketball skills. As well to engage with other kids and work as a group. Working as a group is important to teach to show them to be able to manage how to work together as a team and be team players. I was able to practice my communication skills and my group working skills. I found this course helpful because it was a way of helping out my community and putting a part of myself in the community. It was helpful to work with smaller children because it has helped me work on my communication and group work skills. It has also helped me work on being able to manage my stress and patience as well. Working with small children has helped me with being more patience because smaller children tend to get distracted faster or they do not listen as well as older kids. The experience was memorable because it gave me the opportunity to work with smaller children of age and older children of age as well. I learned more about the academy and how it helps the kids around the community. Learning about the academy and doing my service learning at the academy was an amazing experience. The work that they do with the kids is a very heartwarming and delightful experience of being part off.
